Thirty pieces per style is a realistic launch quantity for a small brand if you accept three conditions: one metal per style, stock stone sizes rather than calibrated specials, and a single plating colour per production run. MOQ is not a factory mood — it is a function of setup cost.
Brands often assume the MOQ is a negotiating position. It is not. Casting requires a mould, stone setting requires a calibrated stone parcel, and plating requires a bath load. Those three items set the floor, and understanding them is how you get to 30 pieces without paying artisan prices.
What actually drives your minimum
| Cost driver | High-MOQ version | Low-MOQ version |
|---|---|---|
| Mould | New master per size | One size, resizable shank |
| Metal | 18K gold, 5 colours | 925 silver or brass, one colour |
| Stones | Calibrated fancy shapes | Stock rounds, 1.0-2.0 mm |
| Plating | Mixed colours in one run | One bath colour per run |
| Packaging | Custom box per SKU | One box, printed card |
A realistic 30-piece launch plan
- Pick three styles, not ten. Three styles at 30 pieces each is 90 units — enough to test a collection and still fund the next round.
- Buy 5-10 samples first. Sample cost is setup cost. Expect sample pricing well above production pricing, and treat it as research, not as a markup you were cheated on.
- Reuse one mould across sizes. A ring shank that can be resized, or a chain that accepts several pendants, multiplies your assortment without new tooling.
- Standardise the stone. One 1.5 mm round brilliant across earrings, pendants and accents keeps the stone purchase efficient and the replacement simple.
- Pre-sell before you produce. A pre-order run converts 30 units from inventory risk into working capital.
What to insist on even at low volume
Low MOQ never justifies low documentation. Ask for a written specification, a stone grade and size on the invoice, a plating thickness figure, and a packing list that matches the SKU list. Ask for the sample you approved to be retained as a golden sample, signed and dated, because that single artefact prevents most quality arguments.
Also decide your own reorder trigger now. Thirty pieces sells out faster than most first-time brands expect, and the second order is where your margin improves. Ask your factory for a reorder lead time in writing — Holycome runs a 7-day rapid sampling process and a 30-day risk-free guarantee, so you can validate a design on a short cycle instead of committing to a year of stock.
