Gold plated jewellery typically stays gold for 6 to 24 months of regular wear, depending on plating thickness, plating method and how the piece is worn. Two microns with a protective top coat under normal care will comfortably outlast a thin flash plating on a ring worn daily.
Gold plated brass is the workhorse of fashion jewellery: attractive cost, excellent detail, real design freedom. Its weakness is abrasion, not chemistry. Once the layer wears through on a high-contact point, the base metal shows, and that is what customers call 'going dull' or 'turning my finger green'.
Lifespan by plating specification
| Plating type | Typical thickness | Realistic wear life | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flash plating | Under 0.5 micron | Weeks to a few months | Promotional, single-event pieces |
| Standard plating | 0.5-1 micron | 3-9 months | Earrings, pendants, light wear |
| Heavy plating | 2-3 microns | 12-24 months | Rings, bracelets, daily wear |
| Gold vermeil | 2.5 microns plus over 925 silver | 1-3 years with care | Premium silver collections |
What shortens the life
- Friction points. Ring bands, bracelet clasps and the inside of bangles wear first.
- Body chemistry. Sweat, acidity and sunscreen attack the layer and speed up base-metal oxidation.
- Chemicals. Chlorinated pools, perfume, hairspray, cleaning agents and hand sanitiser.
- Abrasion in storage. Pieces rattling together in a drawer scratch the coating.
- Improvised cleaning. Polishing cloths used hard on plating are effectively sandpaper.
Care rules that add months
- Jewellery on last, off first: after perfume, lotion and hair products have dried.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each wear to remove sweat and product residue.
- Store each piece in its own pouch; do not stack.
- Remove before swimming, showering, exercising and dishwashing.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap only; never use ultrasonic cleaners or abrasives on plated pieces.
What retailers should ask the factory for
Ask for the plating thickness in microns and the method used, and put both on the purchase order. Ask whether a protective top coat or e-coat is applied, which measurably extends life on brass. Ask for a wear-test result on a ring rather than on an earring, because the two are not comparable. Then pass the honest version to your customer: 'gold plated, designed for everyday wear, remove before swimming' prevents more returns than any warranty.
Give staff a simple script for the two common complaints. If plating dulls, a soft cloth restores most of the shine. If the base metal shows through, that is abrasion rather than a fault, and it is the point where a re-plating or replacement conversation begins.
