Clean moissanite with lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry fully. Avoid steam, avoid abrasives, and avoid ultrasonic cleaning on pavé, glued or plated pieces, because the risk is never the stone — it is the setting.
Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratching far better than most of the metal around it. Almost every 'damaged moissanite' repair we see is actually a loosened prong, a stripped plating layer or a dislodged accent stone, and those are cleaning-method problems.
The safe routine in five steps
- 1. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and one drop of mild dish soap. Never hot water, which can stress plated layers.
- 2. Soak for 10-15 minutes to soften skin oils and lotion residue.
- 3. Brush gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush, working around the prongs and under the gallery rather than across the stone face.
- 4. Rinse under lukewarm running water with the drain closed, or dip in clean water.
- 5. Dry completely with a lint-free cloth, then sit the piece on a dry towel for a few minutes before storing.
Methods and where they are safe
| Method | Solid prong setting | Pave or glued settings | Plated or vermeil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soap and soft brush | Safe | Safe | Safe |
| Ultrasonic cleaner | Usually safe | Avoid | Avoid |
| Steam cleaner | Professional use only | Avoid | Avoid |
| Silver or gold polishing cloth | Metal only, not the stone | Metal only | Light use only |
| Toothpaste or baking soda | Avoid | Avoid | Avoid |
Why the stone loses its sparkle
Moissanite does not cloud. What it does is collect an oily film from skin, sunscreen and hair products, and that film is what dulls the fire. Moissanite is more oleophilic than diamond, which is why a quick wipe with a dry cloth often restores a diamond but does nothing for moissanite. Soap and a brush, not a rub, is the answer.
If a stone still looks flat after cleaning, look at the underside of the setting. Dirt packed under the gallery is the usual culprit, and it is only reachable from below.
Retailer advice worth putting on a care card
- Remove rings before swimming, showering, applying lotion or washing dishes.
- Check prongs twice a year; a loose prong is the leading cause of stone loss.
- Store moissanite separately from harder stones to avoid metal scuffing.
- Bring the piece in for a professional check every 12 months, including a plating assessment.
Build cleaning durability into the order
If you sell moissanite at volume, the setting matters more than the cleaning instructions. Specify thicker prongs, a closed or semi-closed gallery where the design allows, and consistent plating thickness so the finish survives repeated cleaning.
