Why Sterling Silver Tarnishes and How to Stop It: A Retailer's Guide

Why Sterling Silver Tarnishes and How to Stop It: A Retailer's Guide

Sterling silver tarnishes because the copper in the 925 alloy reacts with sulphur compounds in air, forming silver sulphide. It is a surface reaction, not a defect, and it is reversible. Retailers reduce complaints by controlling storage, packaging, humidity and staff handling.

For a retailer, tarnish is a returns problem with a marketing upside: a customer who understands tarnish keeps the piece, and a customer who does not assumes they were sold something fake. Teaching the difference costs you one card insert per order.

What speeds tarnish up or slows it down

    FactorAccelerates tarnishSlows tarnish
Air qualitySulphur, exhaust, rubber, woolTarnish-resistant pouch, sealed bag
HumidityBathrooms, coastal air, above 60% RHDry cabinet, silica gel

Retail handling rules that actually work

    • Rack silver away from the rubber-backed display pads and cardboard trays that release sulphur.
    • Keep display pieces in anti-tarnish pouches overnight rather than leaving them exposed.
    • Use nitrile gloves for handling; latex and rubberised grips are a common hidden cause.
    • Rotate display stock every three to four weeks and clean the rotated pieces before they go back out.
    • Insert a small care card with every silver sale: dry storage, last on, first off, no chlorine pools, no perfume on the metal.

What to tell a customer who sees darkening

Explain that 925 sterling silver contains copper for hardness, that the darkening is silver sulphide on the surface, and that a silver polishing cloth restores it in seconds. Offer the cloth as an add-on — it converts a complaint into a small sale and protects the review.

For deeper tarnish, a warm bath of mild dish soap and water, a soft brush and thorough drying works well. Advise against abrasive toothpaste, bleach and ultrasonic cleaning on set pieces, all of which can loosen prongs or strip plating.

Specify anti-tarnish treatment at the manufacturing stage

The cheapest fix is at the factory. Rhodium plating or an anti-tarnish coating over sterling silver gives the customer months of protection instead of days, and it should be written into the purchase specification with a stated plating thickness. Holycome operates its own 800 sqm plating facility, so plating specification and plating colour can be set as part of the order rather than requested as an afterthought.

Holycome has produced 925 sterling silver OEM and ODM jewellery for more than 18 years, with in-house material testing of silver content and a 30-day risk-free guarantee, serving more than 100 customers in more than 100 countries.
